Le The new digital solidarity labels Print E-mail

The DSF label offers information for those wishing to contribute, through their own consumption, to creating an information society in which solidarity reigns.

Le The new digital solidarity labelsThe DSF presents its digital solidarity label. Built around evocative symbols, the label symbolises an equitable and inclusive information society. The globe refers to the global society while the position of the pixelated hands – the hyperlink pointers so familiar to Internet users – convey the idea of a balanced exchange of knowledge between citizens of the North and those of the South. The blue and orange colours, meanwhile, are based on the main shades of our planet when observed from space. This suggests the idea of a movement that aims to respect our environment.

Although the digital divide has been high on the agenda at international summits for several years, the injustice of this divide receives little media coverage, with the consequence that there has been limited mobilisation to reduce the digital divide.

If adopted by all new technology consumers, the label will raise public awareness of the challenge of the digital divide, resulting in the incorporation of a solidarity criterion into all IT equipment purchase transactions.

“People must come to recognise this label as a sign of an active commitment to an information society based on access to knowledge for all, to promote development”, explains the DSF’s Executive Secretary, Alain Clerc. By supporting companies that adopt the label (thus fulfilling their commitment to social responsibility), each individual can contribute to enhancing solidarity in the information society.

The digital solidarity label is awarded to any public or private institution that makes a commitment to narrowing the digital divide by adopting the “1% digital solidarity” principle. The label is a way for companies and public bodies to announce their commitment to a more inclusive information society in which solidarity prevails.

Each year at a ceremony held in Geneva, the label is presented to the actors (public authorities, institutions, organisations and companies) that have participated financially in the work of the DSF in the course of the previous year.
